1927 The Great Alexander with Two Roaring Twenties Beauties

1927 The Great Alexander with Two Roaring Twenties Beauties

Here's HOFer Grover Cleveland Alexander, at age 40 in 1927, posing with two flappers, in full flapper regalia, from those Roaring Twenties. The ladies have been collecting for charity, but Alexander is a stingy man. He was nice enough to pose for this photo, and he may have even deposited some coins into their canisters, so he's not stingy that way. But he's been a stingy pitcher. Look carefully at his uniform. It says, "World Champions," and in the previous season Alexander was a World Series hero over the New York Yankees. Down 3-2 in games and facing a possible two games against the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium, the Cards started Alexander, and this pitching miser threw a complete game 10-2 win. Then, the next day, with the Cards leading 3-2, Alexander came out of the bullpen in the 7th inning to face Tony Lazzeri with two outs and the bases loaded. This cheapskate struck out Lazzeri and threw two shutout innings to save the game. Great photo of a man in his time.
