Muhammad Ali Robe Worn for Bonavena Fight w/ Photo Documentation

Muhammad Ali Robe Worn for Bonavena Fight w/ Photo Documentation

Red satin robe was worn by Muhammad Ali, a.k.a. Cassius Clay in his historic fight against Oscar Bonavena on December 7, 1970. The Supreme Court had just overturned Muhammad Ali’s conviction regarding his dodging the draft in June of that year. Although not the once completely dominant force he had once been, Ali managed to knock Bonavena down 3 times in the 15th round, before finally knocking him out. Bonavena, a fierce competitor ranking among the top of the heavyweight class had not been stopped in 66 bouts up to that point. Being a notorious partier and womanizer, Bonavena’s lifestyle finally caught up to him and he was found murdered at the “Mustang Ranch”, a famous brothel outside of Las Vegas in 1976. He was 33 years old. This gorgeous garment was worn by the self-proclaimed “Greatest of All Time.” Full length red with white trim and “Muhammad Ali” on the verso in white tackle twill lettering. Shows nice use, but in top condition. Collar tagging is “Tuf-Wear, NY”. No sash. Comes with photo documentation and LOA signed by boxing expert, Craig Hamilton.
