1888 G&B Chewing Gum Roger Connor Card

1888 G&B Chewing Gum Roger Connor Card

Fine example of the 1888 G & B Chewing Gum card of Roger Conner, graded GOOD 2 (MK) by PSA. Conner, elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1976, played for several teams, but his longest tenure was in New York, where he was responsible for the New York Gothams becoming known as the Giants. He also was the player whom Babe Ruth succeeded as the all-time home run champion. Connor hit 138 home runs during his 18-year career, and his career home run record stood for 23 years after his retirement in 1897. Technically designated an E223, this card is in excellent condition, and one that (as can easily be seen) presents far better than its technical grade. The small size (1 x 2.25 inches) of G & B’s and the fact that they were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & B’s are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. This example of Hall of Famer Conner is the photographic portrait variety, which is the most desirable in the eyes of most collectors (G & B’s were also issued featuring woodcut "line drawing" illustrations). Though the front exhibits very light indentations as if from a paper clip and a resulting ghost of a stain, the card presents as Excellent, with outstanding contrast, strong corners, and an exceptionally strong overall visual appeal. The reverse exhibits light nailhead-size paper loss and the number ‘6’ written neatly in pencil, but is otherwise clean and unmolested. A very impressive example of an important Hall of Famer from E223 G & B Chewing Gum, one of collecting's rarest and most highly regarded nineteenth-century card issues – and the only one graded by PSA!
