Outstanding Abraham Lincoln Signed 1864 Discharge Letter
A historically significant 1864 Abraham Lincoln discharge note, handwritten, dated and signed by Lincoln, framed together with a superb 1870 lithograph of Lincoln. On December 8, 1863, President Lincoln issued his first proclamation of amnesty, based on his constitutional authority to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States. In certain cases, amnesty was granted to those returning to the U.S.A., and affirming their belief in the Union cause. The inset note measures 2 3/8" x 2 1/4" and is clearly written in Lincoln's own hand: "Let this man take the oath of Dec. 8. 1863 be discharged", and nicely signed " A. Lincoln, Dec, 20, 1864". The note is matted together with a quality lithograph measuring 6" x 8", and both are beautifully framed under glass to a dimension of 12 3/4" x 18 1/2". Condition overall is NR-MT, with the note showing two very faint horizontal creases. An impressive and highly attractive item, sure to please the most discerning collector. The bold signature grades 9/10.
