Sea Hero 1993 Kentucky Derby Winner's Blanket

Sea Hero 1993 Kentucky Derby Winner's Blanket

Sea Hero burst onto the racing scene in the spring of 1993 when he won the Kentucky Derby as an almost 13:1 longshot. It marked the first Derby win for Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey and for 71-year-old trainer MacKenzie Miller. It was also the first Derby win for Rokeby Stables' 85-year-old owner Paul Mellon, who became the only person ever to win the Kentucky Derby, the Epsom Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Following his Derby win, Sea Hero won the prestigious Grade I Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. He was retired from racing at age four, but this blanket is a testament to that magical day at Churchill. The white blanket with blue trim and red lettering spelling out "1993 KENTUCKY DERBY" was presented to Sea Hero and his owners in the winner's circle after the Derby.
