Secretariat Worn Girth Strap (ex-Penny Chenery)
For a sport as on the periphery of American society as horse racing currently is, it's amazing that the name Secretariat needs such little introduction. The big chestnut colt is easily one of the most famous racehorses in history, having won the Triple Crown in 1973, including a 31-length romp in the Belmont Stakes that is considered to be one of the finest performances in racing history. "Big Red," as he was affectionately known, was named Horse of the Year as both a 2-year-old and 3-year-old, and was elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974, the year after his retirement. On Blood-Horse's List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century, Secretariat is listed second, with Man O' War occupying the top spot. This item is a girth strap worn by the great Secretariat from the 1999 Sotheby's auction offering property from the Collection of Meadow Stables and Penny Chenery, who was the champ's owner. It measures 37.5" and is framed to 9x43" in a gorgeous display with wood reminiscent of Secretariat's iconic chestnut coat. Underneath the strap there is a gold plate that is engraved "Secretariat, 1973, Triple Crown Winner, Girth Strap." The girth strap, which keeps the saddle attached to a horse, shows nice wear and has "R. Turcotte" on it in black ink. Ron Turcotte was Secretariat's jockey in all but three of his career starts; he was not aboard for the first two and final one of his career. Comes with an LOA from Sotheby's.
