2,000th Hit Baseball

2,000th Hit Baseball

Hall of Fame Cardinals infielder Red Schoendienst closed out his 19-year major league career with 2,449 hits. This ball was tagged for #2,000 on the last day of the 1956 season at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia, in his final at-bat of the year. There are two unusual facts surrounding the feat. First, he achieved it in a New York Giants uniform as the Cards traded Red mid-season. The other is that the ball is mis-dated. Red had gone 0-for-4 on September 29 and then went 09-5 in Game One of the September 30 doubleheader before singling in the third inning of the second game. The official National League (Giles) baseball shows use and is signed: "2,000 HIT SEPT. 29, 1956 PHIL." Red's name is NOT on the ball. After a few years with the Giants and Milwaukee Braves, Schoendienst did, in fact, play his final three seasons with the Cardinals, for whom he debuted and went on to play the majority of his career.
